About this event

Join Pier & Beam on Saturday morning, January 21, for an exclusive members-only tour of Asia Society Texas Center, the winner of our 2020 Future Landmark Award.

The gallery and cultural center was Japanese architect Yoshio Tanaguchi's first freestanding building in the United States. Kendall/Heaton Associates were the local architects for the project, which was designed around the idea of "the least architecture with the most expensive materials." The crisply detailed building features Jurassic limestone panels, American cherrywood paneling and large expanses of polished hurricane-proof glass.

The Future Landmark Award recognizes new construction in Houston that is architecturally significant and will inspire designers, developers and Houstonians in general to think more carefully about new construction. In choosing Asia Society Texas Center as a Future Landmark nominee, the Future Landmarks Committee noted the building's architectural merit as well as its frequent programming which welcomes the public and makes the building a vital part of Houston’s Museum District.

Our tour will begin at 10 a.m. at Asia Society's front entrance and will last approximately an hour. As we explore the building, you'll learn more about the project's design and how it contributes to its neighborhood and the city at large.

Please meet at the entrance to the Asia Society Texas Center, 1370 Southmore Blvd. Free parking is available in the Asia Society lot across Southmore as well as on nearby streets. Remember to observe posted parking regulations.

Admission to the tour is free for Pier & Beam members and their guests. You're also invited to join us for a post-tour brunch at Lucille's; please RSVP for brunch when you reserve your spot on the tour.
